West Sikkim Weather Guide & Packing List

“When is the best time to visit Pelling?” This is the most common question we get. The answer depends on what you want: clear mountain views, blooming rhododendrons, or perhaps a chance to see snow.

West Sikkim is a year-round destination, but each season offers a completely different experience. Here is a detailed, month-by-month breakdown from local experts to help you plan your perfect trip.

The 4 Seasons of Pelling

Month-by-Month Guide

Spring (Mar – May)

10°C to 22°C Good Visibility

The Vibe: Colorful & Clear. This is rhododendron season. The valleys around Varsey and Hilley are bursting with red and pink blooms. Skies are generally clear, offering great views of Kanchenjunga, especially in the morning.

Autumn (Oct – Nov)

8°C to 18°C Best Visibility

The Vibe: The Gold Standard. The monsoon has washed the skies clean. October and November offer the sharpest, most reliable all-day views of the mountains. The weather is pleasant and dry, perfect for trekking and sightseeing.

Winter (Dec – Feb)

-2°C to 12°C Crystal Clear

The Vibe: Cold & Dramatic. Mornings are frosty but unbelievably clear. Snow is common in higher areas like Yuksom and sometimes even in Pelling town during late Dec/Jan. It’s the best time for photography, but pack heavy woolens.

Monsoon (Jun – Sep)

15°C to 25°C Low Visibility

The Vibe: Lush & Mystical. The region turns a vibrant green. Waterfalls like Kanchenjunga Falls are at their most powerful. However, mountain views are rare, and continuous rain can cause landslides. Best for offbeat, budget travelers who love the mist.
