Know Before You Go

Do I need a permit to visit Pelling?

Indian Nationals: No permit is required to enter Pelling town. However, you will need a permit to visit the “Zero Point” circuit (Kanchenjunga Falls, Khecheopalri Lake) which your driver can arrange locally.

Foreign Nationals:Yes. You need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). This can be obtained at the Rangpo/Melli checkposts or through a registered Sikkim Travel Agent. You must travel in a group of at least two.

Are ATMs working in Pelling?

ATMs are available in Geyzing (District HQ) and Upper Pelling, but they frequently run out of cash or face network downtime. We strongly recommend withdrawing sufficient cash at Jorethang, Siliguri, or Gangtok before you start your ascent to West Sikkim.

Is Pelling safe for solo female travelers?

Absolutely. Sikkim is consistently rated as one of the safest states in India for women. The locals are respectful and helpful. However, standard travel precautions apply: avoid walking on unlit roads after 7:30 PM and always use registered taxi syndicates rather than private lifts.

Can I rent a bike or self-drive car?
Self-Drive Cars: No. Tourists are currently not allowed to drive private or rented cars (like Zoomcar) in Sikkim due to terrain risks. You must hire a local taxi.

Bikes: Yes, you can rent bikes from Gangtok. Ensure you have a valid driving license and all vehicle papers (including pollution check) before entering West Sikkim.
What is the best time to see the Kanchenjunga view?

The clearest views are usually from October to mid-December and March to May. During these months, the peaks are visible from early morning (sunrise) until noon. Monsoon months (June–September) are generally cloudy, though the waterfalls are at their best.

How do I reach Pelling from Bagdogra/NJP?

You can take a direct taxi (approx. 5-6 hours). Alternatively, take a shared jeep from SNT Siliguri to Jorethang, and then switch to another shared jeep from Jorethang to Pelling. Direct shared jeeps are rare and timing-dependent.

Lost something during your trip?

We connect directly with all registered taxi syndicates and hotel properties in Pelling. If you left a bag in a cab or hotel, we can help find it.
