The Pelling Skywalk is spectacular. The Kanchenjunga Falls are powerful. But if you only visit the main tourist spots, you are missing the heartbeat of West Sikkim.
Just a few kilometers off the highway lie ancient villages where life hasn’t changed much in centuries. These are places where you don’t just “sightsee”—you participate. Here are 5 hidden gems recommended by the Pelling Tourism Development Association (PTDA).
Darap Village
The Cultural CapitalDarap is the pioneer of rural tourism in West Sikkim. Unlike the concrete hotels of Pelling, Darap is filled with traditional Inghwara (Limbu heritage houses) made of wood and stone.
Experience: Walk through cardamom fields, weave bamboo baskets, and eat organic meals cooked on a wood-fire stove.
Lethang
The Lost WorldTucked deep in the valley near the Rathong river, Lethang is a protected reserve for the indigenous Lepcha tribe. It feels like stepping into a time capsule.
Why Go: For the absolute silence of the forest and to witness the pure, traditional Lepcha lifestyle.
Nambu
Waterfalls & MilletOften overshadowed by its neighbor Darap, Nambu is a gem famous for its majestic, tiered waterfalls. It is a powerhouse of organic farming—the millet grown here makes the best ‘Chi’ (local beer) in the region.
Naku Chumbong
The Model VillageIf you want village vibes without the long drive, Naku Chumbong is perfect. The view of Mt. Kanchenjunga from here is framed by traditional prayer flags and pine trees, free from the concrete clutter of the main town.
Yuksom
Royal HistoryFew people explore Yuksom as a village; most just trek through it. Visit the Norbugang Coronation Throne, a stone throne under a massive pine tree where the first King of Sikkim was crowned in 1642. The spiritual energy here is palpable.
