Planning a trip to West Sikkim? Confused about permits? You are not alone. Here is the definitive guide from the Pelling Tourism Development Association (PTDA) to help you travel hassle-free.
Quick Summary
No Entry Permit required. ID Proof is enough.
Need RAP (ILP). Available at Melli/Rangpo border.
1. For Indian Nationals
The Rule: You do not need a permit to enter Pelling, Yuksom, or Ravangla. Just carry a valid Photo ID (Aadhar, Voter ID, DL).
- Local Sightseeing: Visiting Khecheopalri Lake requires a “Local Pass” which your driver arranges instantly at the checkpost. No prior action needed.
- Trekking: High-altitude treks (Goecha La, Singalila) require a Forest Permit. This MUST be arranged by your guide/agent.
2. For Foreign Nationals (RAP)
You need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). It sounds scary, but it is actually free and easy to get.
3. Trekking Permits (PAP)
Going for Goecha La, Yambong, or Singalila? The RAP is not enough. You need a Protected Area Permit (PAP).
No. PAPs are only issued to registered trekking agencies.
Send documents to your agent 15-30 days before arrival.
4. Documents Checklist
Don’t leave home without:
- Original Photo ID (Passport/Voter ID)
- 5-6 Photocopies of ID
