Frequently asked questions

Can I do this trip by car if I cannot trek?

Yes. This itinerary is very flexible.

Jeep Tour (3 Days): You can cover all major monasteries (Pemayangtse, Tashiding, Ralang) by vehicle with short walks from the parking areas.

Monastic Trek (7 Days): For a deeper experience, you can hike the ancient trails connecting these villages (Pelling to Khecheopalri to Yuksom to Tashiding), which takes about a week.

Is there a dress code for entering monasteries?

Yes. These are active places of worship. You must dress modestly.

Shoulders and knees must be covered. (No sleeveless tops or short shorts).

Hats and shoes must be removed before entering the main shrine hall (Lhakhang).

It is respectful to switch your phone to silent mode.

How much walking is involved if I choose the Jeep tour?

Even on the vehicle tour, some walking is required. Most monasteries in Sikkim (like Sangachoeling and Dubdi) are built on hilltops to overlook the valley. You may need to walk uphill for 20–40 minutes on stone pathways to reach the main gates.

Can I take photos inside the monasteries?

Generally, No. Photography is usually permitted in the monastery courtyard and grounds, but it is strictly prohibited inside the main prayer hall where the statues and thangkas are kept. Please look for "No Photography" signs or ask the resident monks before clicking.

What is the significance of the Tashiding Monastery?

Tashiding is considered the holiest monastery in West Sikkim. Legends say that the mere act of looking at its sacred Thongwa Rangdol Chorten washes away a lifetime of sins. It is also the site of the famous Bumchu Festival (Holy Water Festival), which usually takes place in February or March.

Are non-Buddhists allowed to enter?

Absolutely. All monasteries in this itinerary welcome visitors of every faith. The Kirateshwar Mahadev Mandir (Hindu) and the Bon Monastery (indigenous faith) are also open to all. We only ask that you respect the local customs, such as walking clockwise around the chortens (shrines).

Where will we stay during this tour?

Unlike wilderness treks, this route passes through established towns. You will stay in comfortable Hotels or Homestays in Pelling, Yuksom, and Ravangla. Camping is not necessary unless you specifically request it for the trekking version.
